Title: The Last Forest Artist: Laura Bernardeschi Nelson Medium: Oil pastels on paper Size: 45 × 35 cm Finish: Varnished and framed Signed: Yes Description: The Last Forest portrays a haunting vision of a world altered by climate change. At the centre, a dense cluster of dark, towering trees stands enclosed within a circular boundary — a fragile sanctuary, as if these are the final living guardians of a once-flourishing landscape. Outside the circle, the land is stripped bare, branches twisted and lifeless. A single dead tree lies at the base of the composition, its form echoing a warning of what has already been lost. Rendered in expressive, layered oil pastels, the artwork contrasts the heavy, shadowed greens of the surviving forest with the stark, empty earth surrounding it. Small flecks of golden leaves drift through the air, hinting at both memory and decay. The piece holds tension between hope and mourning: nature still breathes, but only within the boundaries humans have left it. A powerful statement on environmental fragility, The Last Forest invites the viewer to reflect on responsibility, resilience, and the urgent need to protect what remains alive.
